“At our core, we are a social enterprise, founded on the principle that local farmers should get paid a fair wage for the food they produce, and as such, be financially sustainable in the important role they play in our lives, our health and our economy. Equal access to this clean, fair and healthy food is an entirely different issue. We are proud partners of the Grow for the Stop program of the Stop Food Community Centre in the Davenport community of Toronto, where we help in fundraisers, community events and delivering local organic fresh produce from participating farms free of charge.” – Paul Sawtell, Co-Founder

“Weʼre always working to reduce our consumption of energy, water and materials. A few of our strategies include minimizing HVAC needs through appropriate seasonal attire, utilizing task lighting and daylighting to light workspaces, employing ground-source heat pumps and photovoltaic arrays, installing water-saving devices such as low-flow fixtures and composting toilets, and minimizing office supplies by handling most activities electronically and utilizing recycled materials for those supplies we must use. After reducing what we can, we also repurpose anything we can before considering buying new, and we recycle as much as we can, including composting kitchen wastes.” – Lura Faust, Executive Administrator

“Through our BEST (Beyond English School Talleres) program, we have worked since 2014 with more than 500 children between prekinder and 6th grade in local communities. Unlike the methodology often used in public schools in Chile, we celebrate errors and use them as a platform to springboard students to jump over their barriers of insecurity and into conversation. This supports their confidence and fluidity. With these positive, practical and fun English experiences, students can more enthusiastically dedicate themselves to the development and practice of English to fuel their future dreams and goals.” – Courtney Yarsley, Founder and CEO

“Core to our business mission is advocacy for the practice of responsible design and business practices; topics we have come to understand deeply through ten years of daily practice. Through our design and manufacturing processes, Staach delivers products designed to sustain. We place great emphasis on selecting materials that will not pose environmental or health risks along their life cycles, and using our business as a platform to improve policies at the local and federal level; our wood comes from responsibly managed regional forests, ensured through Forestry Stewardship Council Certification, and we work tirelessly with our suppliers to ensure material health and transparency.” – Anne Sherman, Director of Sustainability

“Our mission is to make organic, high-quality products while looking after the environment and making an impact in the local community. That impact is produced by our social action: part of our profit goes to the purchase of organic food for community child homes; we associate with big companies as we produce organic products for them; we act as a bridge for other organic companies that want to make an impact in the community.” – Martin Alonso, Director

Having started this business 13 years ago with the distinct goal of offering a space for writers, we can now point to a large global community with strong roots in Chicago. It means we are fulfilling our mission to teach people to express their creativity with confidence, and to building a community of writers and storytellers.” – Jill Pollack, Chief Story Wrangler

“StoryStudio has always been an integral member of Chicago's writing community, and our local Ravenswood area community. In 2008, we created the Literary Alliance of Chicago to gather more than 50 Chicago-based organizations for joint programming and collaboration; in lieu of admission fees, we collect donations for area shelters; we are active in our local chamber, and last year we created the Stories Matter Foundation and the Dana Wood Chaney Writers Fund. The fund provides grants to novelists whose work focuses on social issues.” – Jill Pollack, Chief Story Wrangler

“In addition to the close rapport we have with our roaster customers, we are devoted to the tangible impact we are able to make in the coffee-producing communities from which we source. Weʼre able to impact these global communities because of our four offices in coffee-producing countries: Colombia, Peru, Nicaragua, and Rwanda. These boots on the ground allow us to visit over half of the coffee-producing organizations we work with every year. These offices also allow us to provide regular trainings to these organizations on everything from agronomic skills to coffee evaluation to best practices for warehousing and shipping, all of which result in a stronger supply chain.” – David Griswold, CEO & Founder

“Our beginnings were built on principles of sustainability. Itʼs what drew us to working together, and itʼs what continues to drive us. We continue to push ourselves to find more efficient, thoughtful ways to operate. Our offices run on clean, renewable energy; our fleet is made up of the most fuel-efficient vehicles available, including a solar-powered, all-electric car. We continue to find ways to ensure the reuse or recycling of the majority of our byproducts. The majority of our staff have bike commuted to work for the last decade. Perhaps most importantly, we continue to challenge ourselves to do more.” – Nicole Koch, Director of Outreach

“We work to create impact for students both locally and abroad. To do so, we employ students across Ontario with meaningful work experience. Our student Campus Ambassadors help raise awareness, collect textbooks and promote social good around campuses. With their efforts, we are able to send thousands of textbooks to our partners in East Africa. In East Africa, we work with students, librarians and professors to make that important education material more accessible to those who need it most. By shipping donated textbooks to our partners, we are working to bridge the gap between the demand for textbooks and the lack of resources in our partnered schools.” – Tom Hartford, Co-Founder & COO

“Through coffee, we support justice for our growers, our communities, and the environment. As an activist business, we engage every coffee drinker on big human, economic and environmental issues that matter. Our donations to local social action and environmentalist nonprofit organizations last year totaled $13,864.74, including over 100 hour of donated volunteer time. We help nonprofit organizations with a new way of raising funds. Weʼve created “cause coffee” for organizations that need financial support. We allocate profits to individual organizations to help raise money for their continued operation and growth. Currently, Thanksgiving Coffee Company offers ongoing support for 12 nonprofit organizations in this way.” – Lavender Cinnamon, Community Development

“Best for the World 2016 is the highest honor I can imagine at this point in TMI's trajectory because the B Corp values are perfectly aligned with ours. TMI's work is global, so this designation lets people know that we are impacting not just the local community, but the world. Finally, Berrett-Koehler Publishers, another B Corp, is publishing our first book, Overcoming Bias, and it launches in October 2016. I believe that this designation will help us push the message of diversity and cultural acceptance further into the world at a time that we need it desperately.” – Tiffany Jana, CEO & President

“Our planet provides everything we need. We live in it and for it. We have created a living eco-system where people can come and have an experience of living in harmony with the planet. We produce very little waste. We are conscious of the products we buy and recycle what we are able to – which thankfully these days is quite a lot. Our waste-removal company has just been purchased, and we plan to speak to the new company about creating a recycling facility closer to our town. Our compost goes to our chickens and roosters who in turn make farm fresh eggs – which show up on our farm-to-table menus.” – Lisa Arie, Co-Founder & President

“Being part of the Best for the World list means a great deal. We work tirelessly to provide the best possible toilet service to a part of the population that is too often neglected. We spend hours and days on end in these communities, talking to our customers and to prospective ones, racking our brains to find ever more ways to make the service more attractive and affordable and to make the toilet ever more comfortable. So, a recognition of this global scope is something that makes us, as a team, feel valued, respected and, most of all, confirmed in our mission to bring dignified sanitation to the world's poor!” – Isabel Medem, Co-Founder & CEO

“Part of our business model is to process collected feces into nutrient-rich and safe compost. This means that we affect the environment positively in two ways. One, by removing toxic waste that would otherwise remain in the community, posing health risks to humans, destroying the soil and contaminating the ground waters. And secondly, we make a product that enriches and nurtures the environment out of toxic material, meaning that we produce something that not only doesn't damage the environment, but it actually heals it.” – Isabel Medem, Co-Founder & CEO
